Beat the Peak
By Save Eumundi Team • Jan 23rd, 2009 • Category: NewsWestern Power is urging people to turn up their air conditioners, to reduce power consumption as the peak electricity season approaches.
WA has the highest rate of air conditioner use in the country and Western Power’s Doug Aberle says that means the most effective way to lower electricity consumption is to change air conditioner use.
Launching a new ‘Beat the Peak’ campaign he said people should set their air conditioners to no lower than 24 degrees.
“The single biggest contributor to the peak is air conditioning use, in fact on the hottest day last year is was about a third of the consumption,” he said.
It is estimated households can save 10 per cent of their cooling costs with every degree higher they set their temperature.
Mr Aberle says small adjustments can make a big difference.
“If they adjust their behaviour ever so slightly, the rate at which the peak can be adjusted goes up, and that in turn means that we need to invest less, it also means that the greenhouse footprint is smaller.”
