Powerline protestors source alternative
By Save Eumundi Team • Dec 2nd, 2008 • Category: News, Print MediaA large player in the energy industry presented the Powerlines Action Group Eumundi with its vision for a future devoid of large transmission lines at the group’s last meeting on Saturday.
PAGE coordinator Graham Smith said Sanctuary Energy had a plan to provide power for the region based on demand management.
Mr Smith said Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson had given the group an undertaking when they met in late August to look at commercially feasible alternatives.
“We’ll be writing to Geoff Wilson and saying, ‘We’ve got a commercially feasible alternative, here are the details, we expect you to go away and consider that’,” he said.
Sanctuary Energy’s plan could include solar thermal generators, which harnesses the power of the sun to collect thermal energy (heat).
Thermal energy heats a liquid, like water, and uses the steam from this process to run a steam turbine.
More than 80 community members packed out the CWA hall at Eumundi, a strong show of support for their disapproval of Powerlink’s mandate to build 275kv transmission lines through their properties and build a 50-acre substation north-west of Eumundi.
Mr Smith said LNP leader Lawrence Springborg had shown great interest in the proposal at a recent meeting involving the two parties.
Councillors Vivien Griffin and Paul Tatton and independent member for Nicklin Peter Wellington also attended.

Save Eumundi Team is a group of people who are keen to see our environment protected and insisting that the Queensland State Government and its agencies (like Powerlink) consider viable alternatives rather than the business as usual approach to electricity generation and transmission.
