So What I Wish

Thank you once again for your ongoing enthusiasm with Eumundi Green and sharing local news and interesting happenings.

The Page 3 “The Voices” in Issue 36 of Eumundi Green, “What would you wish for the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and surrounding areas by the end of the year,” has prompted a heartfelt response from me.

We are living in one of the most geographically beautiful areas of the world, normally with an abundance of sunshine and balanced rainfall. The federal government has acknowledged the concern of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions and millions of dollars are being spent internationally to act immediately on the dangers of climate change at all levels. “Succeeding generations depend on us,” (Hon. Kevin Rudd, PM).

Children and teenagers are becoming more vocal with their valid concerns of greenhouse gas emissions.

“This earth is all we have. When this is destroyed by poisons, there is not another one to replace it.” (Dean and Cory Tsilfidis, local hinterland teenagers).

So what would I wish? I would wish that the federal government, in particular the Hon Kevin Rudd and Wayne Swan MP who were both local children from our area, take some action against the state government’s proposal to build a huge power station in the hinterland of Noosa at Eumundi. This power station would then feed huge high voltage 275,000kb transmission lines and dominate the landscape with antiquated infrastructure and dangerous EMRs. Do you want Noosa and the hinterland to look like the area along the Gateway arterial, where a mass of metal high-voltage transmission lines dominate the landscape?

Noosa Council and Land for Wildlife have recognised areas of “high conservation value” within a corridor where the state government proposes high voltage transmission lines. I wonder how much the state government cares for areas of endangered flora and fauna with environmental and historical significance where sacred spirit energy is felt and where families live?

There are alternatives. Let us live from a place of love and be environmentally harmonious with life.

Jeanette Merrell, Eumundi

is a group of people who are keen to see our environment protected and insisting that the Queensland State Government and its agencies (like Powerlink) consider viable alternatives rather than the business as usual approach to electricity generation and transmission.
